In this article, I examine how the seemingly Chinese aspects of Brecht's play from 1940, Der gute Mensch von Sezuan, intersect with Brecht's modernist aesthetic and theory of epic theatre.Additionally, I consider Chinese and Western elements of the text as interpreted in the Chinese opera adaptation of Der gute Mensch, entitled Sichuan Haoren (1987).
